My wife makes CrossFit better
As of last week, my wife finished the Elements class at CrossFit, which introduces new members to all of the movements as well as how things operate in the gym. I personally think it is a great program. When I started, I just scaled workouts and tried to pick up the movements as best as I could.
One thing I have found is that I really love that she is doing CrossFit now. Her choice to pursue it, not mine, has made me truly happy. We speak a similar language now. We split up our schedule which means we cannot workout together, but that is OK. There are times when we have to go our separate ways even though we are both on the same path, if that makes sense. The other night, however, I had to drop some stuff off at the gym and got to catch her running through a warm-up. I had to confess later to her that it was just cool as hell to see her doing an overhead squat. And man, she freaking nailed the form, too. Ladies, can I just throw this out there? Workout with your man. It’s a very cool thing.
When I get home from the gym, and we talk about the workout, the conversation is now different. When I tell her about what all was involved, she has a better grasp on what it means. I love hearing about how she felt during a workout, the weights she used, and the fact that she is lifting weight in the first place. She is challenging herself, just as I am, and making herself better and stronger. We hope to be able to hit the WOD together on Saturday mornings, which is something I am looking forward to. I think it would be great to do a team WOD with her. I could care less about our time. I could care less about what time others get. I could care less about how much weight they are lifting compared to us. I just see so much positive coming from us pushing each other to be better than we were the day before. In the end, isn’t that what matters most?
If she says that she does not like it and wants to pursue something different, I am perfectly fine with that. I am glad that we are able to work around our schedules to allow us both to have such a wonderful outlet that we both benefit from. I am glad that she loves it as much as I do. Not that I was feeling stagnant in my training, but her getting involved with CrossFit has come at a great timing for me for many reasons and made the overall experience that much better for me.

My husband and I recently started TruStrength together. Not crossfit affiliated, but same type of workouts. I love it. You’re right, pushing each other in this way is so positive. It has done a lot for our relationship.

funny that at my house the problem is getting the husband motivated! i never push it though, because you are so right — it has to be up to them to WANT to make a change. we can’t force change on people or they will resent us.
