Can't concentrate
Yesterday we got word that one of our favorite trainers, Shauna, was involved in a car accident.  Not a major wreck, mind you, just a fender bender.  However, a stroke was the reason for the accident.  She is 48 and in incredible shape.  Many of us have said that pound for pound, she is easily the strongest person in the box.  A stroke just shocked me to no end. She was transported to Grady in...

Visit with the new doctor
I did get a bit of good news, though: Granted, that is with BP medication but I don’t think I have ever seen numbers like that.  I went to a new doctor’s office this morning and my BP was in a normal range when they took it.  Normally it is high when taken at the doctor’s office. The new doctor and office was great, vastly different from the chaos I have had to endure at the...

"Run your own race"
If you’re going to count on the competition to bring out your best work, you’ve surrendered control over your most important asset. Real achievement comes from racing ahead when no one else sees a path—and holding back when the rush isn’t going where you want to go. Great article and timely advice for me, as this is something I have been struggling with over the past...

The unplanned
Despite my long run yesterday, I fully intended on going to CrossFit this morning.  That was until my wife woke me up around 11:30 last night and said she needed help as our 19 month old was vomiting.  Hoping not to wake up our 4 year old, we took care of little Emily and tried to get her comfortable.  It kills me to see my kids sick and so pitiful.  We finally got Emily back to sleep around 3:30...

I mean, why not?
I was looking over the long runs that I have ahead of me and took a minute to look at what I have been doing.  In the past 4 weeks I have run at least a half-marathon distance in preparing for Savannah.  Yesterday I thought, why not see if there is a half-marathon coming up and at least get a medal and shirt out of it? I found this race, which is on the weekend that I was scheduled to run 12...

My wife: All kinds of amazing
She has been frustrated lately about exercising.  The running isn’t doing it for her like it used to.  I can’t really blame her, because if I didn’t have CrossFit I would most likely go insane.  While I think it would be awesome for her to try it, her interests lie elsewhere.  I have been doing my best to encourage her to try different things.  This morning, she blew me out of...

I was walking back to my office this afternoon and something shiny caught my eye. I thought it was on the ground. Turns out it was my belt buckle. Not used to being able to look down and see it!

WatchWatch
Today I was looking at my training journal for my marathon and felt pretty boss.  Looking over weeks of running and CrossFit, I felt dedicated and accomplished.  Then I saw this video.  Thankful for the constant humility and for people like this guy who have more guts than me.

I gotta say, today was a good day
I went  in to the box this morning with the mindset of just doing some lifting.  But my mindset always changes once I get there and get the energy levels going.  I felt different this morning.  Like I was just chomping at the bit to lift.  Almost like I could feel it pulsing through my body.  Really odd, but I figured I should take advantage of it. So I did.  And hit a new 1RM on my deadlifts @...

You are not alone
Scrolling through my dashboard the other day and I came across this post and it made me pause. I had wanted to send you something in your ask or reply to that post, but Tumblr is stupid and wont let me reply in length to what I wanted to say.  I didn’t have your email either.  Hopefully you won’t mind me posting this out here like this, but my guess is that since you posted how you felt, you...

Reasons why today was awesome...
1) I issued a challenge to Gill.  She accepted.  Big time.  Not that I had any doubt. There is no need for #2. Who else wants to ante up and join in?

GillSquirt: Consider this your official challenge
After seeing some friendly encouragement from her sister, I asked GillSquirt about what marathon she was going to sign up for. Naturally, she was a little apprehensive about running a full since she has never run a half.  I can understand that.  Truly, I can.  After all, my first 5K was this March and I could not finish that without walking. But is it really that unthinkable to run a full before...

Like whoa...
Longest run is done, hydration and knee icing is happening, and paleo breakfast is being consumed. Hardest run to date, especially the last 2 miles. I did manage to finish with an average pace faster than what I had initially planned. Looking forward to resting for the remainder of the day.

Saturday mornings are the best...
I have heard that after starting strict paleo that I should see some performance drops in the first week or two.  I have had our box owner tell me this, as well as 3 trainers, and 2 members who have followed the same plan.  Naturally since I wrote last night about not seeing any drops, I would experience that today.  It’s all good though.  They have all told me that it bounces back after...

The Next Step: Paleo
Ever since starting CrossFit, I have heard over and over again about this paleo diet and how awesome it was.  I had been following meal plans similar to what was laid out for me after going through the Biggest Loser 30 Day Jump Start book.  After giving up red meat (due to issues with gout) back in January, I had assumed that paleo would mean I would be eating red meat every day or taking on...

Anonymous asked: How's you're motivation level now (as compared to when you and your wife just started this quest)? I know it can be so hard to keep a constant level of motivation for myself. Kalexa1

Anonymous asked: Just wanted to let you know how much I have enjoyed your blog. I sent my son a copy of the Biggest Loser book -- he had told me last weekend that he wanted to get healthy but just didn't know what to do. I pray he gets the same inspiration from it that you did. Bonnie.

New GPS fail
I was a little bummed when I got back from my 10-miler this morning. I saw my average pace was about 2 minutes slower than normal. Sure, I was sore from the 75 OH squats and 5 hill runs yesterday at CrossFit but not sore enough to slow down that much. The new app I used let’s you look at your pace on the map and when I looked I saw the problem. I found that the app logged my first 2+ miles...
