Took a little stroll out to CrossFit Ignis, courtesy of a gracious invite from X-Opher, and to drop off some hoodies and a Hurt Locker banner. Got to bump into some really cool folks, including the one and only Smitty.
Started off with some OHS work based on % of your 1RM. It has easily been a year since I tested a 1RM so I had no clue what to use. Just went with the old max. Last working set was 85% of your 1RM for reps. I felt pretty shaky and only got 6, but it was more than I figured I could do so I was happy.
Since it was 3 degrees outside I figured that there would be no way they would make us run. Naturally, there was running.
20 1 Arm Swing (1 per arm) 53#
20 Box Step Ups 24” w/53# KB
400 meter run
I was catching my breath on the swings once I got the rhythm (never done these before) and I suck at running, so I figured this would be a box step up WOD for me and I was right. First round: feeling good; second round: getting tough; third round: why am I having to take so many breaks; fourth round: Jesus take the wheel; Fifth round: Almost there. Those KB step ups were a lot harder than I thought they would be. I think this was 26 or 27 minutes give or take. Total gasser but a good one.
Great box. The photo can’t do it justice because from the outside it doesn’t look like much. The interior is great. New equipment, Wodify, run well, and welcoming group of people. Can’t ask for much more than that.
On a positive note…
The past 2 weeks have been very difficult for me. Won’t go into that now but let’s just say that anything positive is more than welcomed.
"You are crazy strong."
Those words from my oly coach this morning will easily be the highlight of my week.
PR this morning. Been so long since that happened I am considering sending formal invitations to a party. Real talk.
Really want to try this…
Went to a basic class this morning at the local bike shop. General maintenance etc. Super helpful. Best of all it was free! Learned so much.
When I got my bike I got all that gear and didn’t have the fundamental understanding of certain things. This class addressed all of that.
At the very minimum, breaking down on the side of the road shouldn’t be as stressful in the future.
What’s been lacking
Did my first real WOD in a class setting in over 3 months today. I have been doing my own thing primarily and while I feel like I am stronger, I felt something missing. Realized what it was today during the run when several people that had no clue who I was encouraged me along the way. Think that I may settle back into the class setting and see how it goes. Loved the feeling from this morning. Needed it more than I thought.
From the Hookgrip FB page:
This is what it looks like when 261kg/575.4lbs lands on someone. This is 21 year-old Bahador Moulaei (105kg+, IRI) cleaning a massive 261kg. He almost made the jerk too. It’s scary to think what his potential is over the next few years — the all-time 266kg C&J record may finally fall in Rio if Moulaei falls far enough behind in the snatch portion of the competition.
Been out of pocket this week. Mentally stressed to a new level and physically beaten down with a nasty cold/cough and have just felt like a massive sack of turds.
Today I went to the gym with my wife (snuck the photo of her in the middle swinging the KB). Still trying to get 100%, I opted for just the oly class and not the WOD after. Good call because I was obviously sweating some of the cold out during the oly class.
But let me say, I have really missed the coaching. It was so nice to do drills and really work technique with such one on one instruction. I haven’t had that in I don’t know how long. We did some drills for the split jerk as well as the clean. Totally shocked at how quick the hour passed by.
In the end, I was told “your movement patterns are great, we just have to do some tweaking.” So that felt good to know. She asked me if I wanted to compete and what my interests were. Just felt good to have that conversation again with someone. I am actually looking forward to breaking these movements down and rebuilding them. I have been stagnant for so long it will be nice to see some PRs.
PS - It is the wifey’s birthday today. I won’t tell how many burpees the class had to do because of that. ;-)
Since I don’t understand the challenge, why does AdvoCare remove coffee from what you can have during the 24 Day Challenge but then allow you to have Spark?
Slow-mo of Klokov with 180kg. No pause at the top of the clean, just right into the jerk. So effortless.
